ACBN Provides Training Session

The ACBN Examining Committee met on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at the Marriot Suites in Clearwater, Florida for a full day of training. This was held prior to the Council on Nutrition annual symposium. Present were Drs. Dorothy Anthony, Peter Zilahy, Jack Taylor, Jim DiIenno, Peter Osborne and Jerry Szych. Dr. Shirley Watson who is also a member of the examining committee had previously attended a training session.

The executive board provided a power point presentation. Each member received a number of manuals written by the board as part of the NCCA accreditation process. The first half of the day was devoted to the obligations and role of the Examining Committee. The second half of the day was devoted to item writing (how to write test questions).

By the end of this long day, the ACBN Examining Committee had been introduced to all phases of the ACBN examination and will be well prepared to administer future examinations.

If you have questions about the examination or want to provide suggestions, please feel free to contact any of these doctors. If they can not answer your question(s) the executive board is available to you.

ACBN Board/Examining Committee Meeting

An informal meeting of the executive board with the examining committee was also held during the training session on Thursday, April 27, 2006. The committee recommended that a practice examination be provided via the internet for interested candidates who want to get an idea of the examination content. Texas Chirop ractic College has agreed to help the ACBN accomplish this task by developing the practice exam via “Black Board”. There will be a minimal cost to take the practice examination online.

Newly Appointed Executive Board

Appointments to the executive board are as follows: president – Dr. Arthur Fierro, vice – president -   Dr. Ira Geier, secretary – Dr. John Gaffney, treasurer – Dr. G.R. Moon, director – Dr. Jim DiIenno. Outgoing president, Dr. John Rupolo was honored during the training session with a plaque commending him for his vision and leadership in achieving accreditation. Dr. Rupolo, as immediate past president will help to advise the new president and act as the ACBN “ambassador”.

Council on Nutrition

The ACBN extends its appreciation to the ACA Council on Nutrition for an excellent seminar for certificants to attend. The Council on Nutrition allowed the ACBN booth space and time in which to deliver the President’s Report. We congratulate the new CN board and look forward to a closer union between the two organizations. A special thank you must go to Bonnie for all of the ”behind the scenes” logistics that are always required to make a seminar successful. Did you know that it was Bonnie that designed the CN brochure? !!

Additional thank you must go to Claudia Manning for travel and hotel arrangements. The making a seminar: rooms, food, transportation, location, electronic equipment, vendors, etc. is not easy. We doctors just had to “show up”, but to make everything run smoothly, takes people to do it. The other “people” were the board members of the Council on Nutrition. We thank Dr. Don Feeney, Dr. Kirk Whitten, Dr. Trudy Moon, Dr. Elisa Rosen-Fox and Dr. Peggy Bolks For their time to make this all come together.

President’s Report

Dr. John Rupolo gave a President’s Report to certificants on Saturday, April 29, 2006. The power point presentation is a part of this newsletter.

Dr. Rupolo reported that there are several schools providing nutritional nutrition diplomate courses, or are in the process of developing a nutrition syllabus.

The ACBN has developed a patient brochure as well as a brochure for perspective doctors interested in the ACBN examination. Our public member, Ms. Debra Brock has been helping Dr. Fierro with the patient brochure. The first “draft” of the brochure will be sent to several people for review and criticism.

President’s Message – Dr. Fierro

I am humbled to be selected to the position of president for the next few years. Now that accreditation has become a reality, the effort of the ACBN is to make itself known to the professional world. In order to demonstrate non discrimination, the ACBN now accepts any qualified professional to sit for the ACBN examination. Credential recognition as explained by NCCA Commissioners has allowed the ACBN to expand its certificant base. Jeff Moss, DDS is the first dentist to receive the DACBN in his field. We congratulate Dr. Moss and hope to rely on his expertise in the dental field to act as a liaison and “advisor”.

The ACBN is in the process of marketing its credential with advertisements in various journals, interviews and articles. If you are in a position to help market the ACBN, please feel free to call us at ACBN headquarters. The interest in the ACBN grows. We are receiving many phone calls from various professionals interested in finding out more about the ACBN and how they may be qualified to sit for its examination.

Dr. Rupolo Recognized

Outgoing president Dr. John Rupolo was presented a plague  honoring his years of service to the ACBN. Dr. Rupolo’s vision and focus as we worked towards accreditation was steadfast and unwavering. Dr. Rupolo now can get a little rest as immediate past president.  However, Dr. Fierro will be calling upon Dr. Rupolo for advice and guidance so Dr. Rupolo may not the rest he thinks!!
